Diabetes can have a detrimental impact on the reproductive health of both men and women, enhancing the risk of several reproductive system complications.

According to a recent study, a woman′s likelihood of entering menopause increases the earlier she has diabetes. The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) Annual Meeting will present the study′s findings in Atlanta from October 12–15, 2022.

In the current study, 11,000 women were evaluated to understand the long-term effects of premenopause diabetes on women′s reproductive health in a better way, including their age at menopause naturally. Based on their data, the researchers found that type 1 diabetes diagnosis at a young age (40 years) was linked to a later period of menopause than in people without diabetes. Age at menopause and gestational diabetes were not significantly related.

The results reveal that, compared to individuals who did not have diabetes, people with diabetes have a connection between an early diagnosis of diabetes and an earlier age at menopause, even after controlling for covariates linked to age at natural menopause.

Hence, experts stated that this finding could provide a better understanding and help in further research to prevent the long-term effects of diabetes on the human body and the reproductive system.
